The world cup cricket tournament 2007 kickstarts tomorrow in the picturesque Caribbean backdrop. Like the passionate Caribbean crowd ,the cricket fever has already caught up here with the fanatic cricket fans of India. It’s a well known truth that in India, cricket is not just a game but a religion. Its the game that’s mostly followed by the majority in India and the cricketers are treated like demigods. No wonder that the Indian cricket team with billion supporters back home and their hopes and prayers would be under tremendous pressure to perform well and come back with the much coveted World Cup.

During the last world cup in 2003, the Indian team led by Sourav Ganguly played brilliantly till the final. But in the final , they were trounced by the mighty Aussies much against the hopes of the Indian fans back home. The Indian team is one of the favourites in the tournament this time and as always the team looks mighty and promising in paper atleast. The team is in safe hands, captained by Rahul Dravid- the wall , well known for his prolific batting technique and reliability under tough conditions and vice-captained by Sachin Tendulkar -the Litte Master ,the best batsman India has ever produced and a batting legend with the most number of runs against his name in the one-day version of the game. Then the opener Ganguly, who made a wonderful comeback after his controversial row with Coach Greg Chappel. The other opener, the young and dynamic Robin Uttappa already displayed his explosive batting skills in the limited opportunities he got in the preceding series.Virendra Sehwag, after a really long bad patch has got into the team just on the basis of his past performances and the backing of the captain. The similar and reckless shots through which he gets out regularly leaves much to be desired. The others who would be strengthening the batting department is the only all-rounder in the team – Yuvraj Singh and wicket keeper batsmen – MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik. The spin bowling department is in the safe hands of two experienced bowlers – Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. The pace-bowling department which consists of Agarkar,Zaheer Khan (another team member who worked hard for his way back into the team after being thrown out for poor performances), Munaf Patel,Sreesanth and the Irfan Pathan(who has infact forgotten how to bowl) seems to be the only weaker link.

But cricket is such an unpredictable game and on a given day its the teams that performs well under pressure that wins the game. The much hyped line-up doesnt matter. Anyways I’m happy to be able to write something on one of my favorite sports, that’s “Cricket”. Well, like everyone else I am also eagerly awaiting the start of the mega event. As any other Indian Cricket fan, I hope that the Indian team led by captain Rahul Dravid this time would return triumphant from the West Indies. Jai Hind and all the best !
